Hello, service leaders! This document will provide an outline to the basics of what a District Service Initiative is and what you can do to make sure your club has all the information they need!

District Service Initiative:

DSI stands for District Service Initiative.  An initiative is proposed at the end of every year by the District Service Committee and approved by the District Board to be the theme for the next year.

This year’s DSI is Serve to Conserve: Planet Conservation! There is one thing that unites all of us as Circle K members and also as members of our community, and that is our home, planet Earth. As human activity and the increasing global population continue to exacerbate climate change and environmental stress, it is important to evaluate our carbon footprint, and find new ways to reduce the negative impacts that our actions have on the environment. As members of our communities, it is our responsibility to be aware of our surroundings, including the natural habitats and wildlife as well. By focusing our efforts and providing our environment with the love and nurturing it deserves, our District can make strides in improving the environment and protecting our biosphere. With every member, club, and division working together, we can have a tremendous positive impact on the environment for our generation and the future generations to come.

Here are ways you can incorporate the DSI into service projects for your home club:

  • Start recycling programs at grade schools
  • Work with local businesses or neighborhood environmental group(s) to hold an environmental awareness day at a local school
  • Start a community garden
  • Community (park, beach, river, or school) clean-up
  • City grafitti removal project
  • Wetland restoration
  • School beautification
  • Tree Planting

Need some tabletop service projects ideas related to the DSI?

  1.   Planting seeds/making a seed kit in biodegradable bags that people can plant in their communities
  2.   Set up recycling programs in dorms/apartments
  3.   Repurpose old t-shirts:
  4.   Make them into reusable grocery bags to donate to schools (and educate students in the process)
  5.   Make them into dog chew toys
  6.   Recycling competition
  7.   Strips of paper with seeds in it that can be planted in community
  8.   Mats for homeless out of plastic bags
  9.   Making reusable water bottles
  10.   Making candles
  11.   DIY shower timer
  12. Recycling Art Competition

Try to be as creative as you can with your projects and remember to have fun! Because our District Service Initiative changes every year, our district has the ability to focus on one initiative and make a huuuuge, beautiful impact within that year! Let’s embrace our DSI and work towards serving to conserve together.

**NOTE**

If you are planning on working with other schools outside your home club you must fill out an Event Request Form or ERF to ensure the proper permission is granted and correct number of chaperones/advisors are available for the event. ERF’s take some time to fill out so please allow AT LEAST one month before the event to fill out all the required sections. ERF’s can be found on the CNH website in the Resource Database tab or at the link below http://resources.cnhcirclek.org/category/2-policies_forms_and_manuals/
